| Saltburn by the Sea |
|
Saltburn is a picturesque Victorian seaside resort that oozes history and tradition.
The beautiful Valley Gardens include woodland walks and a miniature
railway. There are long stretches of sandy beach with the backdrop of
the imposing 'Huntcliffe' where you can enjoy and take in breathtaking
views of East Yorkshire's 'Heritage Coast'. Saltburns Victorian
heritage is all around you. It ranges from the impressive architecture
to the oldest remaining water balanced Cliff Lift in Britain. This will
take you down the to the promenade and the pier where, on an evening,
lights shine down into the sea giving the effect of a reflecting
moonlight.
Close to the pier is the award winning 'Smugglers Heritage Centre',
set in ancient fishermens cottages and where the curious visitor can
follow the story of John Andrew 'King of the Smugglers'. |
| Whitby |
|
Whitby
is a short drive from Saltburn, approx 40 minutes. Here you can enjoy
the sights and sounds of what was once a busy fishing town, now more
famous for Captain Cook and the replica of his ship Endeavour that
docks in the harbour during the summer months.
Another famous visitor to Whitby was the writer Brahm Stoker who
created 'Dracula'. Ghost walks are held on a regular basis during the
main season, if you are brake enough to participate!
Whitby
is also steeped in history, from its fishing heritage to the well known
and sought after 'Whitby Jet' that is still crafted today.
One to try is the Local Fish and Chips. You can definitely taste the difference and they alonce are worth the journey if you do nothing else. |
| Goathland |
|
Goathland
is also approx 40 minutes away from Saltburn. Situated on the North
Yorkshire Moors it has become famous of late for the TV series
Heartbeat. Although easily reached by road, a more enjoyable way to
arrive there is 'under steam' via the now equally famous North
Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Here you will be able to visit the Aidensfield Arms, albeit under a
diferent name but that is all that is different from the actual
programme. Filming is carried out throughout the year and if you are
lucky you may get to see the cast in action. |
